Your character's origin is pretty simple. You fall into one of three categories: prime, planar, or blotter.
Primes or primers are people born on the prime material plane. This includes most D&D characters in most campaign settings. Primes are also often referred to as 'clueless', because when it comes to the outer planes they typically are.
Planars are people who were born somewhere in the planes other than the prime material. They could be native to the outer planes, the inner planes, or basically anywhere else. Blotters are people whose past has been erased by the wild magic storms caused by the Opening. They have no memory of themselves or their world, no idea how they got to the Outlands, and no one else remembers them either. So why does this matter? Because it's another way to preserve immersion. If Planescape is totally new to you, it might make sense to play a prime until you get acclimated. If D&D is totally new to you, it might make sense to play a character that isn't really familiar with anything. At any rate, it puts a few more options on the table.
